Green Business

Go Green, Make Green

The benefits of your organization going green are both tangible and intangible:

  • Improve Public Relations and Marketing
  • Save energy and money
  • Attract and retain intrinsically-motivated staff
  • Create new revenue opportunities
  • Gain independent verification of credentials
  • Create a healthier work environment
  • Help protect our planet

Certification Programs

It's important to promote your green efforts, and the best way to do that is to get green certification. A number of programs & memberships are available to promote their commitment to social and environmental responsibility, including:

  •  MGT Membership
  • B Corporation Designation
  • ENERGY STAR
  • Green-e
  • Green America's Seal of Approval
  • Green Business League Certification
  • Green Seal
  •  IGBC Green Business Certification
  • Other Local Business Association Membership
  • Other Local Green Business Networks
  • SCS Certified Product
  • Trade Association Membership
  • USDA Organic Certification
  • USGBC LEED Rating

The value of a certification is both how rigorous it is (providing tangible benefits) and its name recognition (providing mostly intangible benefits). The most rigorous certifications include an independent audit. Unfortunately these can be costly and time-consuming, and, except for government-sponsored programs (LEED, Energy Star and USDA), are not generally recognized.

Green Certification

MI Green Team Certification

The focus of the MI Green Team is to provide the public with greener options and assist organizations move in a greener direction, not to "wear a white glove". With that in mind, we have decided to leverage the Green America Seal of Approval, the most widely known green business certification, along with its extensive marketing resources. As we move forward, we will also offer an audited green certification for those wishing to take the next step.

Green-Washing?

The Green Business League offers an independently-verified green certification - in their opinion the only way to avoid "greenwashing". Check out their position and give us your feedback on this important issue.
